What exactly is a Parfumerie, you ask?
By Dictionary definition, a parfumerie is a place in which perfume is sold or made. In the context of this particular parfumerie and those of 1930s Europe, however, they were far more than that. These shops sold perfume, but they also sold virtually any and all cosmetic products of the time. From makeup to brushes to toothpaste, parfumeries sold just about anything you might need for personal hygiene or cosmetology.
Just as in the United States, shops in Europe were staffed by women before the men returned from the war. When they did, jobs for women became much more difficult to come by, as it was expected that women would stay home and tend to the household needs and the children, and the husband would work to provide financially.
